Mapping Solar Power

Using AI, we’re mapping “hidden” rooftop solar capacity, enabling the electricity system to run more efficiently.
Costs of solar energy have dropped dramatically in the last decade, spurring the rapid growth of rooftop solar.
This has created a challenge for network operators, as these new energy sources are spread out, numerous and often not tracked. This makes it difficult to plan how much electricity should be moved around the network.
To manage the grid efficiently, distribution network operators in local areas need to understand how much solar power is being generated.
Through cutting-edge AI models, we are examining how power flows through the network, helping us identify where there is rooftop solar power generation.
Through this data-led innovation to map and monitor the grid we are actively enabling an increase in solar rooftop generation, whilst also dramatically cutting hardware costs for both electricity grid operators and rate payers.

UK Power Networks (UKPN)
We’re working with UKPN to improve their ability to manage the electricity grid by building AI tools that accurately estimate and forecast unmetered solar energy generation.
This will enable UKPN, alongside future Distribution System Operators, to better anticipate power flows, reducing costs and improving long-term network planning.
