Today, we're thrilled to announce that our leading solar forecast has a brand new look, and a new name to go with it. We’ve redesigned our UI to ensure it fits with the fast paced change within the energy system and, we're releasing an update to our API that makes our forecasts faster, more robust and easier to work with.
So, why update?
The energy system doesn't wait. Traders, grid operators and asset managers are making decisions in minutes, often across several markets at once, and the tools they rely on need to keep up.
At the same time, our own ambitions have grown. We want to take accurate, open solar forecasting to new countries, and quickly. A product built for one market, at one pace, wasn't going to get us there.
So we started from a simple premise, that if our users' decisions are dynamic and fast-moving, the product they use should be too. Everything in this release, from the visual design to the new features and the API, was built in response to that.
Goodbye to Quartz, hello to OCF Solar 👋
We've also made the decision to bring all our products under the Open Climate Fix umbrella. Quartz Solar is now OCF Solar.
One name makes it clearer who we are and what we stand for, and gives us a single, recognisable brand as we expand into new regions and launch new products. The forecasts you know and trust haven't changed, now they just carry the name of the organisation behind them.
A new look, designed around the people who use it
The new UI strikes a balance between the Open Climate Fix brand and the practical needs of people who spend their working day looking at forecasts.
Darker background, lighter yellow. Stronger contrast makes data easier to read at a glance, whether you're scanning a map or comparing forecast lines.
Compact and sleek. Smaller headings and a tighter layout mean more space for the information that matters and less scrolling to find it.
What's new
Multi-country view. For users working across more than one market, you can now view forecasts for multiple countries in one place. Time periods in the UI follow the relevant country or domain, so the forecast always lines up with the market you're looking at.
Clouds that keep up. Our cloud layer is now quicker and more responsive, rendering, so you can see how cloud cover is moving and what that means for generation.
A faster, more responsive map. The new time slider lets you move through the forecast and see the map update as you go. Map data now loads [X% faster / in X seconds – numbers from Brad], so you can explore what's coming without waiting on the screen.
An API ready for growth
For teams integrating our forecasts directly into their own systems, we've also updated the OCF Solar API. It's now:
Easier to use, with quicker access to the data you need
Faster, with improved response times
More robust and mature, built to support more users, more countries and more products as we grow
What's next
This release is the foundation for where we're heading: more countries, more products, and forecasts that move as fast as the energy system does. We'd love to hear what you think.
