Our digital products save money for grid operators and reduce emissions, like our leading solar forecast, which saves NESO £30m annually. Strong data is key to this success.

We can see that AI and tech innovation have the power to solve the greatest energy transition challenges, from grid constraints and visibility, to low-carbon tech adoption and lowering running costs. But data is key to all of this, and too much of it remains locked away and unusable.

For the last few years we have been making the case that opening up energy data is vital to speed up the transition away from fossil fuels. We practice what we preach too, sharing as much of our code and data as we possibly can.

We are passionate about the value of open data and bridging the gap between industry and research. We want to apply this ethos globally by building partnerships with grid operators, governments, researchers and more in other countries. All whilst continuing to drive forwards our UK work.

Many organisations and individuals are asking for access to specific datasets, to support niche-but-important energy system challenges. But there are lots of roadblocks and barriers, and no simple, effective process for requesting data to be shared.

What is lacking is a joined-up, system-wide effort. Unlock Energy Data will convene innovators and data users who believe that greater access to data should be a key principle in the way we manage energy systems. We envision organisations working together to unlock and utilise energy data wherever there is public value in doing so.
